What You'll Find in the 2025 Volvo XC40

If you're shopping today's subcompact luxury SUV offerings, the Volvo XC40 for sale is a sleek head-turner when it comes to style, safety, cabin roominess, and cargo space. With elegant design and contemporary flourishes, the award-winning Swedish brand delivers this knockout when you need to handle more than a simple commute, desire more performance out of your vehicle, and do it all with top-tier comfort. The 2025 XC40 comes in three trims: the Core, Plus and Ultra. All three trim levels come standard with all-wheel drive and many driver assist features, such as emergency automatic braking, BLIS, and Cross Traffic Alert.

All three trim levels also have the same engine, a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that produces 247 horsepower and is assisted by a 48-volt mild hybrid system to reduce tailpipe emissions and help with better fuel efficiency. The battery is charged only by regenerative braking, not plugging it in. The mild hybrid system assists in starting the engine, delivering smoother take-offs and enhanced acceleration when driving down the road. The EPA-estimated fuel economy is 23 MPG in the city and 30 MPG on the highway for 26 MPG combined.

Plentiful Standard Features

Volvo knows luxury, especially when it comes to its climate control systems. All trims of 2025 XC40 come with Afterrun Parking Climate, which, when it is warm outside, will continue to blow in cooler outside air for up to fifteen minutes when the car is parked and the engine is off. This feature is a nice addition for those times you want to remain in your vehicle, like at school pickup or in the drive-through line. Also great for climate control is the humidity sensor, which helps maintain a comfortable cabin climate compared to the humidity level outdoors.

Another great touch is the adaptive power steering feature. This provides different levels of feedback depending on your speed, improving stability when you are driving at highway speeds and giving you more turning assistance at lower speeds. You can also manually adjust the steering weight through the infotainment system, allowing you to decide if you want a firm steering feel or a light steering feel.

The XC40's interior design is seductive in its modern minimalism. The brushed metal is stunning. Intuitive storage surrounds the driver's seat to keep your items safe from sliding around, and the center console is adorned with a sculpted gear shifter. The nine-inch center stack infotainment touchscreen is well integrated into the dash design, and the 12-inch digital driver information center behind the steering wheel includes navigation.

Advanced features such as Road Sign Information can recognize common road signs like speed limits and one-way roads. These are then displayed within the driver information display or shown on the windshield in the head-up display, alerting you if you are driving above the posted limit or to other hazards. The feature is so advanced that it can alert you of a wrong turn down a one-way street and even warn you of upcoming speed cameras on the roadway.

The cargo space is ample and organized-a hook flips out from the glovebox to hold bags, the center console accommodates a full-size tissue box, and a removable garbage bin with a hinged door helps keep things tidy. The flat-folding rear seats can be folded down to accommodate larger items, with up to 57.5 cu.ft. of cargo space in the back of the 2025 XC40. Now, let's get into the specific trim levels and what they offer.

Meet the Core, the Plus, and the Ultra

First, we have the base Core trim, which includes all of the previously discussed standard features, as well as wireless phone charging, Google built-in services, Apple CarPlay, and smart device connectivity. A solid roof and a rear Park Assist Camera with trajectory lines also come standard. Although it is technically the base trim for the XC40, the Core is anything but basic and is a beautiful trim level full of incredible features.

Moving up to the Plus trim level, we see several features get an upgrade. The standard air filtration system gets an added air purifier for cleaner cabin air when caught in bumper-to-bumper traffic in a highway tunnel, for instance. Fog lights are added to the front fascia, and the interior gets a lift from cloth to leather upholstery. The Plus includes a standard panoramic glass roof, and the rear Park Assist Camera is upgraded to a 360-degree camera that includes front, rear, and side Park Assist warnings when you get too close to an obstacle. The sculpted shifter is upgraded to a handcrafted crystal gear selector knob by Orrefors, and the modern brushed metal accents are replaced with beautiful driftwood. Both upgrades embody the essence of Scandinavian design and sustainable luxury.

Finally, we have the Ultra trim level. Coming standard with everything from the Plus, the upgrades for this trim add top-tier luxury when you want every drive to feel like a spa day. At this level, the standard cruise control is upgraded to Adaptive Cruise Control, which allows the XC40 to automatically maintain a safe following distance in traffic. You simply choose the travel speed you would like to keep and then choose a safe time gap to be automatically maintained between you and the vehicle in front of you. The XC40 Ultra will match your desired settings to keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you, even if they come to a complete stop. The Pilot Assist feature included in the Ultra builds on Adaptive Cruise Control by incorporating lane centering. While you still have to keep your hands on the wheel, the car will handle most highway driving tasks for you.

Yet another premium feature is the advanced Pixel LED headlight technology. Not only is the headlight beam wider and longer-reaching, but the technology steers the beam into corners as you turn the steering wheel, allowing you to have better vision around winding curves on dark backroads. When meeting an oncoming vehicle, these headlights will dim the high beams automatically so you can concentrate on the road ahead. As an added bonus, you can set the headlights to play an animated sequence when locking or unlocking the car.

Lastly, the biggest upgrade for the Ultra trim level is the audio system. Instead of Volvo's standard high-performance system, the Ultra comes with a Harman Kardon Premium Sound System for an unmatched surround sound experience. It includes an air-ventilated subwoofer for booming bass notes and delivers crystal clear sound through thirteen excellent speakers.
